Melbourne Cup Day Public Holiday
No work today due to the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday. I'm not particularly interested in the horse race, but am loving the day off. Neale, has had to work today (suffer darling!!) - he'll get a day off in lieu over the Christmas break from the University he works for.
I've been across to Spotlight in Traralgon this morning. I discovered that Vogue patterns were on sale for $5.00 last night. I misread the sale catalogue I received last week and am happy I didn't miss it altogether. I had been waiting for Vogue patterns to come on sale for ages. I bought 11 patterns from my wish list and some more pieces of material - which is in the washing machine now.
Laura is planning on going to QLD in February with her boyfriend and a group of their friends. I'm hoping/wanting to make her some dresses and skirts to take. I've bought a pile of pretty rayons, cottons and voile - they all meet with Laura's approval! I've shown Laura some patterns and she's happy with my suggestions - it helps that she has marked pages of my pattern folders.
Below are some of the patterns under consideration - no doubt it will be very warm/hot in QLD in February.

Shirt with pockets!
I bought myself a loose longline shirt on Friday night and have just put it on this morning - only to discover that it has inseam pockets! I haven't seen this before - obviously I .don't get out much! Anyway, this is a brilliant feature. A place for tissues instead stuffed into my bra!! Hayfever season - thankfully it hasn't hit me hard yet.
I'm psyching myself up this afternoon to have a clean out of the storage locker - the boys have
"stored" a lot of rubbish down there over the years and i need to make some room. Laura is giving up her lease on the room she has been renting in Melbourne and will be coming home tomorrow with her stuff that needs to be stored - bedframe, mattress, screen, chair, shelving units etc. Laura has finished uni for the year and doesn't go back until March next year. She's got some people coming over tomorrow who might be interested in taking over her lease. She'd rather keep the $2500 herself than pay for a room she no longer needs. Heaven knows what she'll do next year - it's too far for a daily commute.

Winter is over.
Well - it is in 2 hours and 10 minutes!!!!
It has been very cold - our coldest in 26 years.
Yes, i know it gets colder in the northern hemisphere - you can keep that. Don't want to experience that - ever!!
Now hopefully, Spring is going to be lovely - and warm. None of the normal rainy Springs we get!

Anzac Day 2015.
LEST WE FORGET
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them."

Mending
i've been mending this week. Sometimes I amaze myself!!!
Monday was a public holiday, so i put it to good use!! I kind of remember telling my husband to 'suffer' -as he left for work. The university he works at doesn't get the public holiday - he will get 2 1/2 days paid annual leave over Christmas though. I read 2 books and then thought i'd better get moving and make a start on the mending. I'm easily distracted!
I mended a t-shirt for Thomas (minor detail that I'd had it a year to do!), I mended a pair of denim capri pants ( popped the stitching beside the fly - which kind of tells me that they were a little too tight to wear ), a blouse, a cardigan, another t-shirt, a pair of shorts, a skirt of Laura's and coverstitched the hems on 2 more tshirts. I set up my coverstitch machine which i bought xx years ago and had never used and it worked beautifully. I did have to google a tutorial on how to release the fabric from the machine - I'd forgotten!!!
Totally loved the idea of a 4 day working week - should happen every week!!! I was really looking forward to my next lot of annual leave which I was planning to take straight after Easter. 17 days off for only 9 days out of my annual leave allocation ( i'm counting the weekends and public holidays as well) - until our branch manager informed me that he had tendered his resignation and he was finishing up the Thursday before Easter. Yep, looks like my leave will be cancelled - major bummer!! Interesting times ahead for us at work - again.
Laura left to go back to Melbourne to University 2 weeks ago She has swapped unis and enrolled in a different course. She completed the first year of Game Design last year at RMIT but discovered that she didn't like it. She applied and was accepted at Deakin Uni and is now doing a double degree in Secondary Teaching and Art.

Happy New Year 2015
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Goodbye 2014 - Hello 2015
Lots of plans and ideas - now to implement them!!
I am aiming for a productive year.
Over Christmas/New Year, my sewing room became the junk/storage room - where everything got shoved into in cleaning up for Christmas. I finally excavated in there yesterday and tidied up - and now have it all but
clean again.
My sewing pattern addiction has not abated. I need to buy a couple more storage tubs to put the latest lot in. I've taken a bag of patterns into work to photocopy front & back of the envelope when I have some spare time.
Spotlight,I'm pleased to say seems to be having more regular pattern sales with patterns costing $5-00. I keep a listing patterns I want to buy on my phone.
During the New Year sale at Spotlight,I picked up a couple of pretty fabrics. A cotton sateen in a lightish grey with a splashy floral print and also a blue paisley print on a cotton pique. I'm thinking skirts. I'd love to get some more of the cotton sateen to make a matching jacket - I feel another trip to Spotlight is in my future!
I washed the lime rayon that I bought several months ago yesterday - only to discover that I had left it on my sewing table in front of the window - a little bit of sun damage!! Lucky I bought a little extra and should be able to work around it. I'll be buying a blind for that window on the weekend.
